This study investigated the influence of mediated power on relationship strength and supplier performance within South Africa's construction sector. A conceptual model was proposed, positioning mediated power as the predictor variable, relationship strength as the mediator, and supplier performance as the outcome. Data were gathered from 389 construction firms across Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal using a validated questionnaire and were analysed through structural equation modelling and Smart PLS. The findings indicate that coercive power positively influences relationship strength, which subsequently impacts supplier quality and delivery performance. These results are consistent with resource dependency, cognitive evaluation, and social exchange theories. The originality of this study lies in its emphasis on mediated power to enhance supplier performance through relationship strength. It contributes to the limited literature on buyer-supplier dynamics in South Africa and underscores the importance of ethical power utilisation in optimising supply chain performance. This study provided actionable insights for practitioners and policymakers to optimise supply chain performance.
